Smelly Leather - How Can You Remove Nasty Niffs

Nasty smells caused by cigarette smoke, vomit, pets or mould.

Unfortunately nasty niffs can cling to surfaces, we usually notice these awful odours when we purchase a second hand suite or a  used car and no matter what we do those smells just won’t go away.

Why?
At worst the smells may have penetrated right in to your inner padding, there’s not a lot you can do about this unless you’re prepared to replace all the padding.

One Step At A Time
The obvious first step is to thoroughly clean your suite using a good professional cleaner, don’t use a cheap cleaner as these have very little cleaning properties (We’ll make our suggestions at the bottom of this article as which products we and our trade customers use to remove nasty smells)
After a good clean applying a leather conditioner will nourish your leather and also contribute to neutralising bad odours.
If you still experience a bad smell on your leather after this process - It may be emitting from the inner padding.

Strange But True
On one particular second hand suite we were asked to clean we had to re-seal the whole suite to eradicate the final residue of curry odours.

How do I remove grease stains on leather?

Grease Stains - Information You Need To Know

These dark unsightly patches are usually where your head and hands make contact to the leather and cannot be removed using a leather cleaner.

Remember leather cleaners only remove dirt from your leather surface - Its worth comparing this to washing your cloths with a soap powder ... Yes it will remove general dirt but the detergent will not remove stains.

What Can You Do?
The good news is that they can be removed or at worst improved, but you will need to call in the professionals.

Why Do I have To Call In The Professionals?
Because removing stains is a very specialist process, when stains are removed on aniline leather it can also remove the dye  - The area has to be professionally re-dyed and conditioned back to its original colour.
On standard (pigmented leather) a similar process is applied but the stain is blocked, re-coloured and re-sealed.

You can contact a local leather technician by browsing 'leather repairs in your county' on our left hand menu.
